How to Help Your Neighbors After a House Fire

How to Help Your Neighbors After a House Fire

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments responded to over 365,500 home structure fires in 2015. Unfortunately, Dallas is not immune to these devastating accidents, which can lead to thousands of dollars in damage and the loss of precious valuables. When you see a family or home in your community that has suffered from such a tragedy, you naturally want to provide help and comfort in any way that you can. At Mr. Restore, we are dedicated to providing assistance and relief as we help families recover from a house fire. We have restored hundreds of homes in our community and know exactly what members of Dallas' communities need to get back on their feet and begin to heal after a fire.

What Should I Donate?

When a family has suffered from a house fire, they are overwhelmed by their loss. You can easily provide support by donating a variety of items. The needs of fire survivors depend on where they are staying after they have suffered a fire and how much they have lost. Almost every family will need the following items:

Clothing – Many families lose all of their clothes during a fire. Clothes are the most basic and necessary items, varying from socks and underwear to winter coats and shoes. The easiest way to donate is to provide gift cards to a local clothing store. This will ensure that the family will be able to purchase clothes that are the right size and style they need.

Food – Your neighbors will be so overwhelmed by their loss and the related obstacles that they do not have the time or means to provide food for themselves. You can donate ready-to-eat meals to help relieve some stress. Keep in mind that some families may have dietary restrictions. To avoid cooking or buying food the family cannot eat, donate gift cards to restaurants and grocery stores in your area.

Toiletries – It is likely that the family will need many personal hygiene items. Many families will need shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothbrushes/toothpaste, deodorant, diapers, razors, feminine hygiene products, washcloths, and other personal hygiene staples.

School Supplies and Toys – If the family has children, they will need children's books, paper and pencils, notebooks, toys, stuffed animals, backpacks, and games.

Basic Items – Remember, the family has lost everything. They will also need kitchenware, dishware, pots, pans, and utensils. Also, consider basic items that you have in your home, such as blankets, lamps, tables, chairs, and other furniture.

How Else Can I Help?

It is likely that the family will need money to purchase any items that they have lost or that were not donated to them. The family will need to rebuild their lives, as they have suffered a great loss. Recovering from a house fire is a long and emotional process, continued support will help them transition back to a normal life. You can help raise money for the family by putting together a fundraiser. Meet with other members of your community to put together a walk-a-thon, bake sale, or yard sale to provide extra funds and support.

Mr. Restore cares about the well-being of our community. We take pride in giving back by sponsoring groups and events that improve the lives of our neighbors.
