How to Prevent Water Damage During COVID-19

How to Prevent Water Damage During COVID-19

Many of us are staying at home in Texas to practice social distancing during COVID-19. Now that everyone is home for much longer periods of time throughout the day, it is likely that your household appliances are being used more often. This means the dishwasher is running more, the laundry room is being used consistently, and the water is working hard to keep up with the extra showers and bathroom trips.

The increased use of water may lead to accidents in your home that can cause substantial water damage. Unattended water damage can lead to costly repairs – extra stress that you and your family do not need during this national pandemic. Prevent unwanted water damage while you and your family stay home using our tips:

Water Damage from the Bathroom

Now that people are home and using the bathroom more often, be wary of water damage that can occur from extra use. The plumbing will have to adjust to more frequent handwashing, showers and flushes, which can put a strain on the pipes. Frequently check your water pressure and underneath the sink to be sure there are no leaks or problems with the plumbing.

Remind your family to clean up extra water that may be left behind after a shower or washing their hands. Remember, water that is left sitting and unattended can lead to mold and mildew growth. Water sitting on floors and countertops can also lead to water damage to the material

Water Damage from Appliances

Now that everyone is staying home, your appliances are likely being used much more often. Talk to your family about how to correctly use the dishwasher, washing machine, and other appliances around the house. Overusing an appliance or using the wrong soap can cause them to malfunction and lead to leaks, or even worse, flooding. Suggest using smaller loads and handwashing dishes or clothing items to prevent overworking the appliance if possible.

Mr Restore has responded to many homes that have suffered serious water damage in the kitchen and laundry rooms due to broken or misuse of appliances. Some other appliances in your home that can cause water damage include an ice maker or garbage disposal. Remember, frequently check around these areas while you are practicing social distancing to ensure everything is working properly.

Water Damage from Other Accidents

Water damage can occur in a variety of ways around the house. If your family has a pool, be sure that everyone is dry before entering the home to prevent sneaky puddles seeping into your floors. Wet clothes and towels should not be on the carpet, tile, or wood floors. If they sit for too long, this can also lead to water damage and mold growth. Be sure that all spills around the house are promptly cleaned. Now that the weather is heating up, be sure that windows are closed when you are finished enjoying the fresh breeze. An open window during a rain storm can lead to serious water damage inside your home if left unattended.

Although accidents may happen, following the tips above will keep your water damage risk low. We hope that you and your family are staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
