6 Signs Your Home Needs Electrical Repairs

You probably don't think about it much- but electricity is constantly moving throughout your home. It is important to keep the electrical systems in your home up-to-date through regular maintenance. A faulty electrical system can lead to a fire and serious fire damage. You can feel better about the system's efficiency and safety when you keep your home's electrical system up-to-date. Not only will your appliances run more smoothly, but your outlets will be ready for everyday use. More importantly, you can avoid hazardous electrical fires that could harm your loved ones and cause home damage. There are plenty of signs that you may need to do some electrical repairs in your home. Here are a few of the warning signs that you, as a homeowner, can look for. Fire prevention starts with awareness!

Frayed and Damaged Wires

Wires can become frayed and damaged through everyday use. The sheathing of most wiring is not very strong and can easily be torn. Damage of any kind to wires prompts an immediate repair, typically from a professional.

Outlets

Your electrical outlets in your home can be checked easily. They should never:

  • Be warm to the touch
  • Have scoring marks
  • Have scorch marks

If you notice any of these issues, immediately contact a professional to repair them to prevent possible electrical fires.

Circuit Breaker

Your circuit breaker box will trip to prevent your appliances from overdrawing electricity. When a circuit breaker "trips," it is working correctly to prevent an electrical fire, similar to a safety switch. Overdraw can cause a fire or damage your equipment. Consult a professional if you constantly flip a switch or two at the breaker box. This is especially true if you don't know why it keeps tripping.

Smell or Smoke

Smoke or the smell of electronics burning is a big warning sign that you need to replace the electronics. Keep an ear out for cracking, buzzing, or sizzling sounds coming from the outlets and/or wiring. Immediately turn on the electronic and call a professional, especially if you can't figure out what is wrong.

Dimming Lights

A more subtle sign of a problem than a tripped breaker is the dimming of lights when you run another appliance, like a vacuum cleaner. Turning on one device should not dim the lights on the other devices.

Hire an Electrician

Be sure to call a professional regarding electrical work, considering electricity is very dangerous for someone who has not been trained. A professional electrician knows the best ways to work on your electrical problems. Turn off the power at the main box until professional help arrives; however if you have a visible problem. For example, turn it off if smoke is coming from an outlet. This will help prevent an electrical fire. Additionally, have a professional inspect your system at least once a year.
